Founder Story

Benjamin Ofori, founder of Scholars & Roots Ghana

Benjamin OforiFounder

Benjamin Ofori was born in Dominase in Ghana’s Ashanti Region and grew up in Takoradi. He wanted to continue his education after Junior High School, but financial hardship put Senior High School beyond his reach.

Benjamin chose another path forward, training in electrical work while often travelling without money for food or transport—and sometimes walking six miles to construction sites. He earned professional certifications, but never forgot how it felt to have his education limited by circumstances beyond his control.

That experience became a lifelong commitment to help children overcome the same barriers. In 2025, Benjamin shared his vision with a co-founder and a small team. Together, they began Scholars & Roots Ghana: an organisation rooted in the belief that financial hardship should never determine a child’s future.

“When we educate a child, we don’t just change their life—we give the entire world a reason to hope.”

We visited the school to listen, assess its needs and understand the barriers its pupils face. In response, we are running Ready for School, a programme we developed to remove the practical obstacles that can keep children from learning. It aims to provide learning materials, backpacks, shoes and uniforms, help families pay school levies, and strengthen access to food and technology. The school also lacks modern infrastructure. By addressing these barriers, we can help equip pupils to obtain a better-quality education.

Our goal is also to connect the school with volunteers who can assist teachers in English and Mathematics—subjects in which 50.3% and 45.3% of learners assessed nationally were below basic proficiency, respectively.

Our assessment found that many pupils receive little support to remain in school. When students leave education early, boys often enter motorcycle-taxi work, while girls may move into farming or face early pregnancy. Because these are among the most visible paths around them, other possibilities can feel out of reach. Through our Ready for School programme, we aim to provide learning materials, backpacks, shoes and uniforms, help families pay school levies, and offer mentorship and financial support. With these obstacles addressed, pupils can remain in school, broaden their sense of what is possible and obtain a better-quality education.

We also aim to connect the school with volunteers who can support English and Mathematics—subjects in which 50.3% and 45.3% of learners assessed nationally were below basic proficiency, respectively.
